Mumbaikars, who witnessed the highest tide of the century last monsoon, have a reason to rejoice as all the high tides this season will be below 5m, however any tide above 4.5m is a matter of concern.

Last monsoon thousands of people flocked across the coastline to catch a glimpse of the highest tide that measured 5.05m.

As there will be no such sights this time round people living across the coastline areas face no threat of high tides of above five metres this monsoon, a civic official said.

"This year, luckily we do not have tide of 5m and above like last year. But still any tide over 4.5m is considered as high tide and if it is coupled with heavy rains then it will definitely be a matter of concern," Disaster Management Cell, joint municipal commissioner, SS Shinde told PTI here.

According to the data available with civic officials, there will not be any high tide measuring five metres this year, the highest being 4.95 metres on August 12 at 1344 hours.

"To ensure that Mumbaikars do not face difficulties this monsoon, pumping stations at Haji Ali and Irla will be ready by this year. Also, we will keep the people updated about the dates of high tides and other details through our website," Shinde said. Apart from installing CCTVs at chronic spots — Milan Subway, Dadar TT and Linking Road, we will take other measures, Shinde said, adding, "It is too early to talk about measures and other other rescue operations."

Last year the highest high tide of 5.05m set in on July 24 while, this year's high tide of above 5m has already passed in the month of February. The tide measured 5.18m.

The deluge of July 26, 2005 received 944mm of heavy rainfall coinciding with a tide of 4.48m which saw the entire city marooned with unprecedented floods that took lives of more than 400 people.

According to the civic administration, in the month of June there will be tides from June 13 to 17 measuring between 4.58m to 4.73m. The tides measuring between 4.66m and 4.90m will visit again the Mumbai coast between July 12 and 16.

The month of August will witness high tides of 4.53m to 4.92m length from 10 to 14 while September will witness 4.50m to 4.84m long tides from 7 to 12, civic officials said.

"We need to be cautious as there are about 14 days when there will be tides more than 4.5 meters long. If such tides coincide with heavy rains then it is dangerous. We will ensure that Mumbaikars remain safe," Shinde said.

According to the list sent by Mumbai Port trust (MPT) to the MCGM, this monsoon will have 26 high tides measuring between 4.5m and below 4.95m.
