The city is all set to turn off the lights today on the occasion of Earth Hour.
Year 2007: About 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses in Sydney turned the lights off to start the largest environment campaign — the Earth Hour.
Last year, Earth Hour saw people across 135 countries switch off for an hour. Today, once again, millions will go beyond the hour in a bid to creating a more sustainable planet, for an hour between 8.30-9.30 pm. Mumbai’s business towers have pledged to support the cause and be in dark for an hour, just like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Toronto’s CN Tower, Rome’s Colosseum, among other iconic buildings.
Organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Hour’s mission is to stop the degradation of the earth. Viveck Shetty and band is slated to perform to kick off the movement today with a candle vigil along with solar lanterns by Young Environmentalist at Verona Fountains Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, 8 pm onwards.
Shetty observes, “When Mother Earth is calling, you never put her on hold. And music is a universal religion which touches hearts in a manner that very few things can. So this year we have chosen to spread the message of Earth Hour through music. We have a special composition with a unique message for this occasion.”
Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel along with the Lakeside Chalet Marriott Executive Apartments has decided to join in.
“Every year we switch off the lights in the restaurants and lobby area for an hour to contribute to the initiative. We also make sure that the ambience is pleasant by lighting candles,” says Hemant Tenneti, Director of food and beverage.
The Westin Mumbai Garden City too will initiate energy-saving measures. “Going beyond the Earth Hour, we have been working towards conserving energy and water resources to try and reduce the impact of our business on the environment,” says Lance Ourednik, General Manager.
Courtyard by Marriott will welcome guests with a special Earth Hour Rangoli in the lobby that will also have Earth Hour posters. General Manager, Gautam Bhandari, says, “‘Switch Off and Start Saving’ is our motto. We will extend our whole hearted support to raise awareness about climate change and sustainability issues. We are deeply conscious of the growing concerns and are having initiatives to support the Earth Hour by building awareness and going beyond the hour.”
