Worried about not being selected for professional courses and missing out on good job prospects? Don’t be. University of Mumbai is going to take care of placements for its Arts, Science and Commerce students.

With the help of an outsourcing agency, varsity rolled out a pilot project — employability assessment of undergraduates — 10 days ago. As part of its first phase, launched in 20 colleges, testing of all final year students of undergraduate courses is on.
City’s elite colleges do have placement cells, which help students get a suitable job with a good pay package, but not all colleges have such facilities. The project aims to fill this gap.

The varsity has 400 Arts, Science and Commerce colleges, which have more than 4 lakh students in undergraduate courses. Of these, 1.5 lakh are in the final year.

Mridul Nile, director, students welfare, University of Mumbai, said, “We have chosen four colleges in each district for the project. The test is available free for all students, and even the university need not shell a penny.”

The employability test — Aspiring Mind Computer Adaptive Test (AMCAT) — assesses a student on various parameters. He/She gets a personalised report card highlighting his/her weaknesses and strengths. The company conducting the test will also help students get a suitable employer with their AMCAT score.

Nile said, “We are done with seven colleges, all placed in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The Thakur college and Jhunjhunwala college in city are next on the cards. In the next phase, starting in January 2012, we will roll out the assessment and placement for postgraduate students as well. The exercise will be evaluated at the end of the placement season, and then it will be rolled out in all colleges.”

“After much criticism by Nasscom and other industry bodies over poor skills and lack of employability of 60% graduates and postgraduates of Indian varsities, the university decided to test its students’ employability,” said a varsity official.
