The teachers of Mumbai University and affiliated colleges went on a hunger strike on Tuesday, protesting against the university's failure to regularise appointments of teachers who have got their MPhil per the University Grants Commission's (UGC) regulations of 2006.

Over 50 teachers observed a hunger strike at the Fort campus from 7 am to 6 pm.
The strike was conducted under the banner of the Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (Buctu). "Teachers with MPhil qualifications appointed between 2006 and 2008, on a contract basis, are yet to be regularised.

This is despite the UGC's letter to the state government clarifying that these candidates should be approved as regular teachers," said Madhu Paranjape, officiating general secretary, Buctu and university Senate member. The call to go on strike was announced at the Senate meeting on October 26.

"There are more than 30 teachers who are suffering due to the university's maladministration. They are qualified but working on a consolidated salary of Rs5,000 to Rs8,000. Some have been terminated by their colleges," said CR Sadasivan, Buctu president.

"We are looking at all cases and will solve them at the earliest," said Chandra Krishnamurthy, acting vice-chancellor of Mumbai University.
