Mumbai University plans school for college teachers

Mumbai University is planning to open a training school for all college teachers to orient them on teaching students perfectly. The move is aimed to upgrade the quality of education in the university affiliated colleges. 

The university authorities have thought of this project following low attendance in the colleges. While teachers claim that students do not want to study, students attribute their absence form classes to teachers’ ‘boring style and lack of knowledge’.

The new school will help teachers to understand the subject they teach and show them interactive and innovative methods of teaching. 

“The training will be continuous according to the change in the syllabi. Experts from across India and from outside will be invited to train teaching staff including principals,” Dr Rajan Welukar, vice-chancellor, who came to attend the second annual state conference of the Association of Non-Government Colleges on ‘Sustainable Development in Higher Education’ conducted at National College, Bandra.

Dr Suhas Pednekar, Principal of Ruia College, welcomed the move.

“Degree teachers just finish PG and NET or PhD and start teaching without any training. Even principals are not provided with any training to handle administrative work. If we really want to upgrade our higher education, teachers need to be trained continuously and their performance should be assessed by students.”
