The University of Mumbai hit the panic button after its officials found that a fake eligibility letter had been issued from the varsity’s eligibility and migration certificate unit.

While the university is clueless how such a major goof-up took place, it has issued a circular to all affiliated degree colleges to cancel the admission done on the basis of this fake eligibility letter.

The circular issued by the University of Mumbai says that a bogus eligibility approval letter has been issued to a person named Himanshu Bhatt by misusing the letterhead of the eligibility and migration certificate unit.

DNA has a copy of the bogus letter, which has been typed in Hindi. All university official correspondence is always in English.

The letter number EL/C. 11048 of 2011 dated June 1, 2011, has been issued with the bogus signature. The letter certifies that Bhatt who appeared for Class 12 examination through the Central Board of Higher Education, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, is eligible to take admission to first-year degree courses offered by the university or affiliated colleges. However, this board has not been approved by the Council of Boards of School Education in India.

Varsity officials said that similar bogus letters are being issued from different websites to students who appeared for class 12 exams from the Central Board of Higher Education, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi.

The circular gives detailed information about the bogus letter and informs affiliated colleges to cancel any admission done on the basis of any such letter and also to report to the university if they get such a letter.

Dr TA Shivare, principal of Hinduja college, said: “It is very unfortunate. The university needs to have a proper and strict system in such matters. This incident should not be taken lightly. There could be similar cases where colleges have been misled with such bogus letters.”
