Noelle Gomes, a teacher at St Andrew’s College, Bandra, has alleged that the management is trying to silence her by maligning her reputation.

On Friday, Gomes, an HSC board examiner, was correcting papers when the Bandra police barged into the room and tried to drag her out. The principal of the college had lodged a complaint claiming that the teacher had refused to fill the muster for paper correction.

“The management is just trying to spoil my name because I have been complaining to the education department about the illegal appointment of teachers in the college,” said Gomes, adding that the college authorities have been harassing her for a few years.

According to Marie Fernandes, principal of the college, Gomes was aware of the protocol. “Every examiner has to enter the answer sheet number being assessed by them. However, this teacher has been refusing to do so. As a custodian of the answer sheets, I had to intervene and call the police to restrain her from taking the papers,” said Fernandes.

Fernandes alleged that Gomes was using a cellphone while correcting and clicking pictures of the answer sheets.
Refuting the allegations, Gomes said, “I have been with this college for the past 10 years. I have been a board examiner for 20 years and do not have a single complaint against me.” Gomes has now sought help from a parent-teacher organisation, Forum For Fairness In Education.

The president of the forum, Jayant Jain, plans to file a formal complaint against the management with the education department. “The government has to take strict action against the college management as teachers do not have grievance cells. A committee has to be appointed to check such incidents,” said Jain.

No formal complaint has been lodged by the school, a senior inspector from Bandra police station said.
