The Gamdevi police on Sunday nabbed a taxi driver who had stolen more than 20 taxis in 45 days with the help of duplicate keys from South Mumbai.

“Jafarullah Kadiwala, 48, was arrested outside Bhatia Hospital while stealing a taxi,” said Sanjay Diwadkar, senior inspector.

He added that the police recovered two screw drivers, bunch of duplicate keys and three taxis stolen from Gamdevi area.

“His modus operandi was to keep a watch on taxis parked on the roadside and also to check whether the driver had left after parking the taxi. He would then open a door of the taxi with a screw driver and start it with a duplicate key.

After stealing the taxi, he would then sell it to some garage for Rs5,000 to Rs10,000 and flee to his native place at Palanpur in Gujarat,” said Diwadkar.
He added that he used to visit Mumbai after spending the entire money. A son of taxi driver, Kadiwala was an expert taxi driver and knew a lot about taxis and its spare parts. His both hands were fractured in an accident two months ago. He has been a criminal since 2008.

The cases of stolen taxis were registered against him at the Agripada, Mahim, Santa Cruz, Vakola, Malabar Hill and Azad Maidan police stations. “He was released from jail on December 19, 2010 and started his nefarious activities again,” said sub-inspector Ravindra Gabre.
