The Mumbai suburbs lead in the consumption of country liquor in the state, Pune district tops in consumption of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), while Thane district accounts for the highest beer consumption.

The state excise department’s figures indicate that Thane region — comprising Mumbai’s city and suburbs, Thane and Raigad districts — consumed the highest amount of IMFL at 5.01 crore bulk litres, which forms a substantial part of the state’s total consumption of 13 crore bulk litres, between April 2011 and February 2012.

However, the consumption has shown a dip of around 7.01% compared with the consumption figures for the corresponding period in the previous financial year.

Pune region — comprising Pune, Ahmednagar and Solapur districts — is second with 2.81 crore bulk litres.

The IMFL consumption in Thane region from April 2010 to February 2011 has been 5.39 crore bulk litres, while tipplers in Thane district have accounted for the largest beer consumption in the state — 5.49 crore bulk litres of the state’s total consumption of 25.84 crore bulk litres.

The consumers in Thane district’s four districts have guzzled 12.97 crore bulk litres beer - the highest in all regions in the state -followed by the Pune region with 4.80 crore bulk litres.

Nagpur region — comprising 11 districts from Vidarbha — is the largest consumer of country liquor with 7.75 crore bulk litres of the state’s 29.42 crore bulk litres consumption from April 2011 to February 2012.

The figure, however, is down by 5.34% as compared to the 0.98% fall across the state.
