Mumbaikars parted with their beloved deity with a heavy heart when the five-day-long Ganesha idols were immersed on Sunday.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), around 16,263 Ganesha idols were immersed till 6pm on Sunday across the city. Out of these, immersed in ponds — natural and artificial — 14,563 were household idols and 92 were Sarvajanik. Around 1,745 were Gauri Ganesha idols.

“So far, no untoward incident has been reported and all processions for immersion have been smooth and peaceful,” said a civic official.

BMC officials said security has been beefed up at 72 immersion points, which include 27 beaches.

After a drowning was reported on Thursday in Goregaon, BMC chief Sitaram Kunte on Saturday had visited the immersion points in Juhu to take stock of the preparedness.

The BMC, as a part of festival preparedness, has deployed 240 lifeguards at various immersion points and increased the number of lifeguards at major ones.

Meanwhile, in what could be called as a miracle, of the total idols immersed on Sunday, three came out from yellow capsicums at the home of Shanay Kothari, a Santa Cruz resident. “I had bought three yellow capsicums at the market. When I cut them open, I saw three Ganesha idols, one inside each. So, considering it as a blessing of the lord, we did the puja and immersed them in an artificial pond in Khar (West),” Kothari said.
