Instead of feeling guilty about wasting their time on social networking, a group of city MBA students have created their own social network, which will allow students to utilise it to advance their professional life as well.

Inspired by the amount of time youngsters spend social networking, a team of eight MBA students from Mukesh Patel’s School of Technology Management and Engineering (MPSTME) have developed India’s first social networking website.

They promise that the site would be free of offensive content and will be sensitive to Indian sentiments.

“The thought of creating the website struck us when we thought about the time we spent on Facebook. When we are on the website, we don’t do anything that helps us professionally.

So we decided to offer several features that would cater to the professional needs of an individual as well,” said Avni Agarwal, a student of MPSTME.

Socheers has features of several networking sites. The site includes features like uploading and sharing documents that a user might be working on, a jukebox that allows uploading of music and many others. The users can also play games with each other as well as chat simultaneously. The site also facilitates video chatting.

Within days of being online, the site have seen record numbers. “We’ve got phenomenal response. We have over 50,000 hits within the first two days of the test launch. The maximum hits have come from India, followed by United States, UK, Canada, Qatar and Japan,” she added. She added that they are also contemplating a tie up with an NGO.

On the professional front, www.socheers.com requires you to fill in your professional details in order to be able to go through another’s professional profile. On the social scenario, it is evident that the site is as young as the users it targets. "Of course, utmost care will be taken to keep it free from offensive content, keeping in mind the Indian sensibilities," she added.
