Alarmed by the increasing number of students failing class 9, the education department is now reviewing results for classes 8 and 9 across city schools.

The officials are also checking the records of schools with more than 93 pass percentage in the secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams as the department fears that schools might be failing large number of students in class 9 to achieve 100% results in the board exams.

And, schools with faulty records will receive show-cause notices.

“We wanted to check whether schools are only promoting students who are good in studies to class 9 so that they achieve 100% pass percentage in SSC exams and build their image,” said PR Pawar, education inspector, western zone.

“We have already submitted last year’s records to the head office and are in the process of gathering information for this year,” he added.

The records collected from every ward over the past year show a disturbing trend of rising number of students flunking in their class 9 exams. In many schools, the number of students promoted from class 9 to 10 has dropped drastically and this has helped the schools achieve a perfect score in the SSC exams.

According to the report, last year, only 20.93% students passed the class 9 exams in Holy Prophet English High School at Malad. But the school secured a 100% pass percentage in the SSC exams. Similarly, Lion’s Airport School in Vile Parle promoted only 34.54% students to class 9 and managed to secure a 100% result in SSC.

One of the reasons for students being unable to cope with the class 9 syllabus is that teachers do not identify weak students and provide required remedial classes.

“Teachers prefer to rush home after school instead of staying back and helping the weak students. Many schools will not even show that they have weak students just to escape remedial teaching and holding re-exams. So, all of a sudden you see that students have stopped performing in class 9,’’ said Jayant Jain, president of Forum For Fairness in Education, an education NGO.

The schools should identify weak students early and bring them on a par with other students, Jain suggested.
