Residents of Bandra-Khar-Santa Cruz can again look forward to having a stretch of Carter Road for themselves, without noisy vehicles.

An almost 1.5 km stretch of the road will be available to them on February 20 when the second car-free day is observed. No cars, except for emergency vehicles and cars of residents living on the stretch, will be allowed between 7am and 10pm from Otters’ Club to Cafe Coffee Day.

An initiative to reduce noise and air pollution while encouraging walking, cycling and skating. “A number of NGOs will be working on this issue. A permanent feature this time will be making of paper bags,” said Neera Sehgal, trustee of Khar-Bandra-Santa  Cruz Foundation (KBSF).

Rag pickers working with an NGO, Force, have been invited to the promenade to make paper bags from newspapers. “We have kept an entry free of one newspaper for anyone coming to Carter Road on that day. After the bags are made, they will be given to licensed vendors in the area for a nominal cost to discourage use of plastic bags. The reasoning behind not giving them away for free is to ensure they are valued,” added Sehgal.

“The larger plan is to make the H-West ward plastic free. We intend to allot a permanent space on Carter Road where these workers can make paper bags through the day, and where residents can come to donate newspapers,” said Renuka Tahiliani, another member of KBSF. The organisers are looking for sponsors who can pay wages to these rag pickers.

“Leading dieticians will be around to give suggestions. Five new bicycle stands will also be inaugurated to give a fillip to bicycle users,” added Tahiliai. The stands will come up at Pali market, Union Park and three at Carter Road. Residents have promised to keep decibel levels low this year.
