Surendra Chavan, 54, senior section engineer at Central Railway's loco workshop in Parel, was arrested on Friday on charges of causing death by negligence of commercial sex worker.

"The incident took place at the railway officers' quarters in Parel on Thursday night when Chavan's wife Yogita, 46, and adopted daughter, 5, were visiting their relatives," said Vikram Patil, senior inspector at Bhoiwada police station. Chavan went to Dadar station at 10pm and struck a deal with a prostitute named Julie, 45, for Rs500 an hour. The duo consumed alcohol before having sex at his third-floor flat, police said.

When Chavan did not open the door after his wife returned at 11.30pm, she locked the door and left. Meanwhile, Chavan used bed-sheets as a rope to get down from his flat. Julie, however, lost balance and fell. She sustained head injuries and lay unconscious in a pool of blood. Instead of taking Julie to hospital, Chavan went to his house. On realising that his wife had left, he went down and brought Julie's body outside the quarters with the help of a watchman and kept it on a footpath.

After Chavan's wife returned, the couple went to a relative's house in Kurla. The police control room on Friday alerted the Bhoiwada police about the body.
