The city police are preparing documents to seek the extradition of Gulam Hyder Dawood alias Madhiya, currently detained in the UAE. He was held on the basis of a red corner notice issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 1996.
Dawood was detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau of the Abu Dhabi police on February 23, 2010. “The Mumbai police sent the Red Notice saying Dawood is wanted for murder,” said Harsh Bhal, spokesperson, CBI.
Though, the red corner notice mentioned that Dawood was involved in criminal conspiracy, violation of firearms Act, murder and terrorist activities, the Mumbai police are seeking his extradition only for murder as they have strong evidence in that case.
“The evidence has to pass judicial scrutiny of the country from where a wanted person has to be brought back. We do not want to take any risks and will seek his custody only for murder,” said a senior city police officer.
The city police have in the past failed to extradite several accused, including music director Nadeem Saifee, as the evidence shown was not sustainable abroad.
