A rich Bengali baba and two of his accomplices have been arrested by special squad officers of the Mumbai Police on Thursday for allegedly duping several people. The baba used to advertise on cable network that he could cure any problems with his so-called miraculous medicines and was paying the cable operators Rs1 lakh per month for the same.

On receiving of information that a fake baba was operating in the Santacruz area, senior inspector Rakesh Sharma and his team laid a trap and arrested Furkhan Ali Abdul Sattar Malik alias Baba Pasha Bangali, 26 and his accomplices, Mohammad Raes Chand Mohmmad Malik, 24, and Shakeel Mohammad Ali Ansari, 32.

Sharma said the baba would pay around Rs1 lakh per month to these cable operators for broadcasting his advertisement.
“He has a plush office in Santacruz for which he was paying rent of Rs15,000 per month. He would pay Rs8,000 as rent per month for his residential place in Khera Nagar. His monthly expenditure is more than Rs2 lakh,” said Sharma.

During the interrogation, the baba revealed that he had taken professional training in Ajmer on how to dupe people by providing medicines and fake assurances.

Speaking about how the baba would con people, Sharma said, “He would give some ashes wrapped in a piece of paper and tell the customers that this would bring them luck, and he would charge money for the same. The rates would keep on increasing and by the end of the month the client would end up paying as much as Rs20,000. In order to make sure that the customer would come regularly, he would tell them that his miracle cures take at least a month to work. It has been learnt that at least 20 clients visited the baba daily.”

“He was paying Rs4,000 as salary to his accomplices. We are now examining whether the cable operators displaying his advertisements can be booked in this crime,” the officer said.
