The Khar police have started searching for the woman who abandoned her six-month-old foetus in the compound of Rizvi Complex at Bandra (West) on Saturday morning.

The police are visiting all hospitals in Khar, Bandra and Santa Cruz to find out the number of abortions conducted recently.

“We are also planning to send women constables in plain clothes to the slums nearby to enquire about the main culprit,” said an officer.

“We sent the foetus to Bhabha Hospital mortuary, from where it was taken to Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem. Preliminary investigation revealed that it had been aborted before being dumped. It was also observed that the baby was fully developed,” said, assistant inspector Navnath Sonawane.

“It appears that someone left the baby and escaped because the boundary wall of the building is low and anyone could have jumped over and dumped the bag inside,” said Sonawane.

The incident came to light around 9am on Saturday when a sweeper of Virgo Villa building in Rizvi Complex was cleaning the premises and saw a bag. He found a foetus wrapped in a plastic bag.

He immediately informed the building watchman Dinesh Dube. Meanwhile, other society members were alerted too, said the police. Building supervisor, Ramesh Sharma, informed the Khar police.
