Mumbai police have claimed to have busted an inter-state fake currency racket with the arrest of six persons possessing Rs4.09 lakh counterfeit notes here.
The accused were identified as Mohammed Ali Hussain Shaikh (20), Ijjabul Shaikh (27), Mohammed Paigam Shaikh (25), Amaruddin Shaikh (26), Mufazul Shaikh (19) and Ismail Shaikh (20) – all hailing from Peerpur village in Jharkhand, police said.
Probe is on to establish if the notes have been brought here from Bangladesh, as the village is just 30 km away from the neighbouring country's border, they said.
Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap and nabbed Hussain and Ijjabul with Rs2.84 lakh fake notes from P D'mello Road in South Mumbai on November 26, they said.
"During interrogation, they revealed names of their associates. The next day, the other four with Rs1.25 lakh fake notes were held from Pydhonie area. The notes consists of Rs500 and Rs1,000 denominations," additional police commissioner RK Padmanabhan said.
The printing and quality of notes is amazingly close to original notes, he said.
Explaining their modus-operandi, he said that the six had arrived here three months ago and procured these notes from Jharkhand through a mediator.
