A day after a construction labourer died after slipping from a beam at the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) metro site in Andheri (West), there was no official briefing coming in either from Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) or Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. While authority officials were either refusing to comment or were unavailable, MMOPL officials were complacent just sending the “safety” precautions, which they claimed were observed on the site.
On Friday, Reliance Infrastructure came up with a few details of the investigations. “The incident’s root cause was looked into and responsibility was fixed on a person in the contractor’s team as well as our own organisation. The level of supervision by the contractor’s execution and safety team will be increased by deputing more experienced experts,” said a written statement by MMOPL.
Banvari Lal, 24, died after he fell from one of the metro beams near Navrang cinema on Thursday around 4.30am. However, not a single official from the authority, which has a 26% stake in the Reliance Infrastructure-led MMOPL, was aware about the mishap till Thursday night. When DNA called on Thursday night, SP Khade, director, Mass Rapid Transit System and in charge of metro-I, and MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar were unaware of it. “If there was an accident, news channels would have been on it throughout the day,” said Khade, suggesting that MMOPL did not bother to inform him. MMOPL director KP Maheshwari also did not respond to calls and messages.
On Friday, attempts to reach authority officials failed.
