The neglected and littered walls of the subways lying in neglected state will now get a face lift. The BMC will help provide an aesthetic change to the subways which will now be used for art exhibitions.

Yuva Sena leader Aditya Thackeray on Tuesday proposed that Metro subway should be used to showcase creativity of aspiring artists.

“The walls of the subway are dirty, with people spitting and urinating there. They can be used to encourage young talent. The walls will be now be used to display photographs and paintings,” Thackeray said.

The BMC will handle the task of cleaning and beautification inside the subway.

“The BMC will tidy the subways, after which the art canvases will be put on the walls,” said mayor Shraddha Jadhav. The paintings and the photographs will be displayed on a zero commercial basis. Interested people can submit an application to the Yuva Sena or the civic body and get their creation displayed.
Moreover, to give a boost to the task, the BMC will also form an art and culture department. A separate civic official under the department will be appointed for receiving and compiling the applications.

A tie-up will also be made with a college or an NGO. With the collaboration, the pictures to be displayed will be updated at regular intervals, Thackeray pointed out.

The pilot project will be limited to Metro subway. However, official added that based on response from the citizens the scheme will be extended to remaining subways.
