A day after the Mumbai Marathon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to impose a penalty on organisers for not cleaning up parts of marathon route and Azad Maidan ground.

According to civic officials, the permission was given to the marathon organisers with a rider that they must clean the route and ground after the event.

“We waited till Sunday evening. But, the organisers did not initiate the cleaning process, which is why we took it upon us. We have also gathered photographic evidence of the areas,” said a senior civic official.

The official added that the organisers cleared some parts but not all.”We can’t wait for days. We are gathering data from six wards of the routes that were used to calculate the penalty. It will be done in a day or two. The amount will be deducted from the deposit,” added the official.

However, the marathon organisers denied reports.

“We have cleared the marathon and maidan. We just need to pick up the material that is left. We could not manage it because it is not possible for us to clear it in a day. Keeping in mind that it took us more than a day to set it up,” said Bruno Govaes, a spokesperson.
