The Mumbai Marathon finished well for Indian long-distance running, with Ram Singh Yadav setting a new Indian course record and qualifying for the London Olympics.
The ninth edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2012 had a record 38,400 participants — 400 more than last year.
In the 2004 event, there were 22,000 participants.
Celebrities came in droves to promote their causes.
Actor Shabana Azmi brought some of her colleagues from the film industry,Chitrangada Singh, Prateik Babbar, Ronit Roy, Tanvi Azmi and others, to promote Mijwan, the organisation set up by her writer-lyricist father Kaifi Azmi for the education of girls in rural areas.
Actor Aditya Raj Kapoor walked with followers of Jain guru Rakeshbhai Jhaveri.
“I am a spiritual person and attended a satsang held by Bapa (Jhaveri). Since then I have been a follower. There are a lot of principles here that can be applied to daily life,” said Kapoor.
Sanket Bhirudh, a visually impaired management student, completed the half-marathon in two hours and 30 minutes.
Bhirudh had participated in the Dream Run at last year’s marathon.
