Mumbai demanded water but it got blood, Swabhiman, the NGO led by Maharashtra revenue minister Narayan Rane's son Nitesh  said, after a protester died following violent demonstrations at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to demand restoration of water supply.

"The city wants water, it got blood," a statement by the organisation said.

"Mumbaikars are facing 30% water cut across the city and the suburbs. With a hope to get water after the rains as promised by BMC, the protesters raised their voices to demand for the same," the NGO said in the statement.

As the civic officials are doing little to snap unauthorised connections that result in massive water thefts and leakages across Mumbai and also the fact that they are hand in gloves with the water mafia, the common man took to the streets today, it said.

Protesters from Thane, Mulund, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai participated in this rally. The lathi-charge resulted in death of a protester, Viral Dholakiya, 43, at GT Hospital.

The injured include Chetan Solanki, Mohammed Omar and Gulab Nagulaka who got stitches on head. Around a dozen people got injured and were admitted to GT & Cama hospital, it said. They include Prathamesh Kolamkar, son of a local MLA.
