An unidentified couple recently went on a shopping spree worth over Rs55,000 at Big Bazaar in Lower Parel on a debit card belonging to a female lawyer, stolen from Mangaldas market in south Mumbai.
The lawyer, Pallavi Kothari, lodged a complaint of theft, cheating and forgery against the couple at LT Marg police station. However, when contacted, she refused to comment.
Sources said that Kothari, 33, along with her mother Indrani Patel and aunt Vidya Yadav, went shopping in Mangaldas market on April 22 at around 1.40pm. At one of the shops, the victim kept aside her handbag while looking at some items.
It was only at around 3.55pm, when Kothari received a mobile alert about a purchase worth Rs295 on her debit card, did she realise that her money purse, containing two debit cards, Rs3,000 in cash, diamond-studded earrings valued at Rs30,000 and her driving licence, was missing.
Even as Kothari instructed her sister Shruti Patel to block her cards, she received three more SMSes in a interval of four minutes, informing her that items worth Rs55,397 had been purchased at Big Bazar in Phoenix Mills Compound, Lower Parel.
On reaching Big Bazar at 5.10pm, Kothari was informed that a couple had purchased three expensive sarees and also showed her the debit card slip. On seeing the couple in the CCTV footage, Kothari was shocked to find that the couple, who left the shop at around 5.20 pm, was the same couple who she noticed standing behind her in the shop her she had left her bag unattended.
“We have lodged a complaint of theft, forgery and cheating against the couple and a manhunt has been launched to nab them,” said a sub-inspector at LT Marg police station.
