In the wake of the recent revelation that two Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives had been residing in a rented apartment in Byculla without police registration or a tenancy agreement, it has come to light that the police have not maintained records of tenants.
On Tuesday, when DNA spoke to a few senior officers about tenancy information in their jurisdiction, they gave vague excuses and avoided the questions.
Senior police inspector, Lakhanlal Mathure, of the Byculla police station, said, “Right now I do not have any data of tenants in my jurisdiction, and I cannot speak about this now.”
Pradeep Lonandkar, senior police inspector of the Gamdevi police station, said: “I have only joined a couple of days back, and will have to check the data with my officers.”
It may be recalled that Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Coleman Headley had stayed in a rented accommodation in Gamdevi. The owner of that flat had not registered his tenant with the police either.
When DNA brought this issue to the notice of Mumbai police spokesperson and deputy commissioner of police Nisar Tamboli, he said, “I will check with all the senior police inspectors and find out why data on tenants are not maintained by them. Action will be taken accordingly. There has been strict instruction to the police to maintain records of tenancy in their jurisdiction.”
