Police officers are often referred to as rude, callous and insensitive. But a 16-year-old boy, an SSC student, living on the Sion-Bandra Road, would probably beg to differ. Why? Because the police delayed his arrest by six days.

On March 11, officers of the Dharavi police station received a complaint against the boy. His neighbours and parents of a five-year-old girl had approached the police, alleging that the boy had molested their child.

When the police reached the boy’s house to arrest him, they got to know that his exams were going on.

Senior inspector Hemant Patil of the Dharavi police station said: “The accused, a Std X student of South Indian Education Society’s School at Wadala, was appearing for his SSC examination. We got to know that his exams would end on Wednesday. By arresting him that day, we did not want to spoil his future. So, we allowed him to finish his exams and arrested him on Wednesday evening.”
Elaborating on the case, Patil said that around 5 pm on March 10, the boy took the girl in a corner of the building and allegedly touched her private parts after removing her undergarments. He then allowed her to go.

The girl didn’t inform her parents about the matter the same day. But the next day, she told them. They lodged a complaint against the boy.

The accused has been sent to the Dongri Remand Home and will be produce before the juvenile court on Thursday.
