In true filmi style, a woman constable’s fiance jumped out of a running BEST bus and chased the man who snatched her gold chain at Macchhimar Colony in Mahim (West). He succeeded in nabbing the thief after a 100 meter chase and a small scuffle with some help from passers-by.

The incident took place at around 7.30pm last Thursday. The woman constable, Shweta Ganmehar, 24, is attached to the BKC police station and lives in Dadar. Usually she met up with her fiance Tushar Davne, 26 after work. Davne who works in a private company in the Gulf was in Mumbai on leave.

The couple chatted for a while and then walked to the Macchhimar Colony bus stop. Both boarded the single-decker BEST bus that plies on route number 202 (Bandra-Dadar) to head towards Ganmehar’s home. They were sitting behind the driver’s seat, the constable at the window.

When the bus started, a youth who had been standing across the footpath approached the bus. He stretched his right hand towards Ganmehar and snatched her gold chain that weighs 6 gms. The constable was too shocked to react and the chain snatcher had hotfooted his way out of the bus.

Ganmehar’s fiance then jumped out of the bus and cornered the thief and handed him to the police.

“The chain snatcher was identified as Hamid Yasin Quireshi, 22, a resident of Mankhurd. He was remanded to police custody till March 15 by the metropolitan court at Bandra,” said police inspector Vinay Kulkarni of Mahim police station.
