A 23-year-old son of a policeman allegedly committed suicide at his father’s quarters in South Mumbai on Thursday morning.

The police claim that the youth could have taken this extreme step due to his unemployment and addiction to alcohol. No suicide note was found at the spot.

Pankaj Paan Patil, was residing in the police lines quarters at Imambada gully in Bhendi Bazaar, along with his parents. On Wednesday, Patil’s parents had gone to Nashik, leaving him alone at home.

The police said the incident came to light when Patil’s friend, Dhanaji, arrived at the residence on Thursday morning. Dhanaji found Patil hanging from the ceiling fan in the main room of the one-room kitchen flat.

Dhanaji informed the police, who reached the spot and sent Patil’s body to JJ Hospital for post-mortem. Patil was a Class 10 dropout and had also left his job at a courier firm two years ago.

Patil’s father had retired from service on January 30 as assistant sub-inspector and was last attached to Byculla police station. “We believe that Patil was suffering from depression as he was unemployed and also the police quarter where he and his family was staying had to be vacated as his father had retired from service,” said assistant commissioner of police, Dongri Division, Ravi Thakur.
