A 22-year-old police constable was today arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping minor daughter of his colleague near Mumbai, police said.

The incident took place on January 20 when Ganesh Tarpe, attached to the Colaba traffic police division, took the 15-year-old girl to a resort at Virar in adjoining Thane district, they said.

Tarpe knew the victim, studying in Class IX in a municipal school here, as their families had stayed at police quarters in suburban Kurla for around five months.

On Thursday, Tarpe asked the girl to bunk her school and accompany him for an outing, police said.

"Tarpe arranged his friend's car and drove the girl to the resort, where he allegedly raped her," said Vijay Bagwe, senior inspector at Kurla police station.

Her father, a constable attached to the Trombay Police Station, later lodged an FIR following which Tarpe was apprehended.

The girl has been sent to a civic hospital for medical examination, Bagwe said, adding the accused-policeman has been booked under IPC Sections 363 (kidnapping), 376 (rape) and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation).
