The DB Marg police have arrested a 23-year-old diamond broker for allegedly stealing diamonds worth Rs75 lakh from another broker. The police, however, have not been able to recover the stolen diamonds from the arrested suspect.

According to senior police inspector Ajit Surve from DB Marg police station, Rishabh Chajed was arrested on Friday last, and will be in police custody till February 9.

As per the complainant Anubhav Tripathi, 28, a resident of Opera House, he was called by Chajed to an office at Panchratna Building on January 30, to show his diamonds to a client. Tripathi met Chajed and showed him a packet containing diamonds.

“Chajed went inside an office on the pretext of showing someone the diamonds, and came out after some time with a purchase price. I refused to sell the diamonds at that rate, and then Chajed told me to wait there while he went out to the gallery to make a phone call,” said Tripathi in his complaint.

When Chajed did not return and was not responding to phone calls or text messages, Tripathi approached the DB Marg police.

“The police had received information that Chajed is hiding in Ranchi, but when the police arrived there he had already fled. He was later arrested in Mumbai on the basis of information gathered by the police,” he said.
