While the rest of the city does not want stray dogs, Mulund citizens want them back. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been getting a lot of complaints regarding stray dogs going missing from their area. According to dog lovers in Mulund, the stray dogs taken for sterilisation are not returned.

“We are receiving many complaints from Mulund. Residents have been calling in to check on the dogs that were picked from their area for sterilisation,” said Lieutenant Colonel Dr JC Khanna, member of the Animal Welfare Board of India and of the BMC-appointed Dog Control and Management Monitoring Committee.

“Earlier, BMC workers used to pick up the dogs and take them to the sterilisation centres. However, the complaints have gone up after the BMC appointed two NGOs [V Team and Royal Veterinarians] for the job. Their people goof up the areas they pick the dogs from,” added Dr Khanna.

Dr Khanna said, “People call the centres to enquire about the dogs. They also visit the centres and leave the address where the dogs have to be dropped after sterilisation.” He added that concerned residents could note down the number or colour of the vehicle that comes to pick up the stray dogs so that it is easier for them to track the animals.

Priya Iyer, a resident of Mulund who had contacted the BMC regarding missing stray dogs from her area, said, “I went to the centre to look for the dog from my society. Though it wasn’t difficult to find him, I found the animals being put into small and unhygienic cages.”

According to the dog census of 2007, there are 70,182 stray dogs in Mumbai and 26,900 pet dogs. Since 1998, the BMC spent nearly Rs5 crore on the sterilisation drive and sterilised over 1.30 lakh strays.

The civic body stopped the killing of stray dogs in 1994 as per high court orders. Before 1994, it used to kill strays.
