The existing Andheri station sees more than two lakh passengers daily and the number keeps growing by the day.

To accommodate the growing commuter population, the railways are developing the station to provide upgraded passenger amenities.

Last year, the railways had inaugurated the Rs4.41-crore swank Andheri station building. “The new state-of-the-art station building is a ground-plus-two-floor structure and its aesthetics and interiors have been designed keeping in mind the requirements of the commuters,” said a senior Western Railway official.

The building has been merged with the MMRDA skywalk. It has 10 unreserved ticket counters, eight reservation ticket counters, public toilets and even two lifts and food plaza on the ground floor.
The old structure at Andheri’s platform number one will also soon be demolished as a part of the Rs5,300-crore phase two of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2) to extend harbour lines from Andheri to Goregaon.

The railway budget had allocated funds for this project and the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation has already begun the ground work.

The Rs100-crore harbour line extension project is part of the Rs5,300-crore MUTP-II that is expected to be completed by 2014.
“All this will lead to more traffic and commuters at the station and, so, there was need for bigger and better station buildings,” the official added.
