After Wednesday’s Pune rampage caused by a mentally unwell bus drive Santosh Mane, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has decided to review the mental and physical health of all its 37,000-odd drivers.

MSRTC managing director Deepak Kapoor has decided to form a technical committee after having received strong indications that Mane had apparently hid his health record from the corporation, said officials.

“Presently, we do not really have a proper system of knowing the health status - mental and physical - of our drivers before they turn 40; except for the mandatory health check-up that is done when they join service. After 40 years of age, they have to undergo compulsory medical checks including eyesight, blood pressure,” said a senior official from MSRTC.

“The technical committee is likely to not only check the drivers’ health records, but also suggest ways of knowing how we can be aware about the health status of our drivers,” the official added.
Kapoor is expected to announce the names of the committee members when he returns to the head office in Mumbai soon.

“The committee will have a month to submit its report and suggest measures to tide over the problem,” the official said.
Mane’s health and accident records did not suggest that he faced any problems. In his 11 years of service, Mane was involved in only four minor accidents. Also, there is no record of him going on long leaves due to medical reasons.

“He was so dedicated towards his work that he never bothered to go on long leaves. No doubt, he hid the fact that he was seeking medical attention but we were not aware about it,” the official said.
