At least eight people, including a woman passenger, were seriously injured when the bus they were travelling in tumbled over the side of a flyover at Matunga early on Thursday morning.
According to the police, a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus hit the parapet of Jagannath Shankarseth Bridge in Matunga, before tumbling.
The bus was carrying about 10-12 passengers. The incident took place at about 1.20am.
The bus was on its way to Mumbai Central from Pune and travelling at high speed, police said. The driver Ganpat Aiware, 47, suddenly lost control and the bus hit the parapet of the bridge. The bus tumbled over the side and went careening down the road.
Trapped inside the vehicle, the passengers and the conductor started shouting for help.
Onlookers immediately informed the police. Within minutes, a mobile van of Matunga police rushed to the spot and took the injured to Sion Hospital.
The conductor Sameer Zagde fractured his right hand and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. A few of the passengers who were injured include Ashok Sonawane,45, Vikhram Shenavi, 30, Vimal Igave, 41, Mahesh Igave, 56, Vilas Joshi,50 and Santaram Muley, 33.
Zagde has lodged a complaint against the bus driver for rash and negligent driving. Aiware was arrested on Thursday. Further investigations are on, a police officer said.
