Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is on a crusade to invite investments to his state. His ambitious 430 acre-Film City project coming up in Bhopal is one of the ways in which he plans to invite Bombay’s film fraternity to invest in Madhya Pradesh (MP).

Speaking to DNA, after announcing the Film City project in Bhopal at the Hotel Taj in Mumbai, Chouhan resisted making any comparisons with Mumbai and said that MP’s USP (in setting  up film city) is its rich cultural heritage and its scenic beauty of the nine national parks and three world heritage sites.

The announcement was a part of a day-long seminar with investors and industrialists, organised by the Madhya Pradesh Trade and Investment Facilitation Corporation called ‘Destination Madhya Pradesh: Investment Drive 2009-2010’. The session was attended by eminent film personalities like Boney Kapoor and Raza Murad.

Chouhan told DNA that the Film City will be spread around 430 acres, a few kilometres away from Bhopal. “I got some interesting suggestions from Raza Murad who wants to open an acting institute. There were also suggestions that the government should enter into a joint venture with film studios or give plots to studios to develop on their own,” said Chouhan.

“There is also a suggestion to reduce the entertainment tax if 50% of the movie that is shot in MP. All these suggestions will be incorporated in the final policy to be drafted soon.”
The seminar highlighted how Chouhan’s government has invested heavily in power, roads, air connectivity and the information highway.

The state recently had a successful investor meet attended by industrialists like Kumar Mangalam Birla. With 67% of the state’s population dependant on agriculture, Chouhan said the government’s focus today was to promote agro-based and food processing industries.
