The number of senior citizens registering with the Mumbai police has risen drastically in the past one month. According to the police, the reason behind this rise is their initiative to make the elderly aware of the need to protect themselves.

The recent attack on a 75-year-old woman at Malabar Hill and the Kalachowkie incident where a lady was murdered when she went for a morning walk with her husband has left many senior citizens feeling jittery about their security.

Nearly two months after Hamari Suraksha, a website for senior citizens, was launched by the Mumbai police commissioner D Sivanandhan, around 13,500 people have already registered with it. "Senior citizens from all parts of the city are registering with us," said sub-inspector Feroze Patel, who is in-charge of Elderline. "People have realised the importance of registering their details with the police. They now know that this is for their own security."

Around 300 senior citizens from Colaba have registered with the police, out of which 250 registrations were done in the last 20 days. "Our people are going to every house to convince people to sign up. We have approached the society secretaries to give the name and address of all the senior citizens in their buildings," said inspector Deepak Dhole.

At Malabar Hill, the number is around 403 out of which 100 registrations were done in the past one month. In Cuffe Parade, around 100 elderly registered with the website in the past two weeks. Earlier the number was only 35.

Around 545 Gamdevi residents have also registered with the website. The maximum registrations were done in the past month.
