A survey by the city traffic police shows there are 51 accident-prone spots in the city and almost all of them are on the outskirts. More road accidents are taking place in the suburbs.

From 2001 to 2011, there were 3,968 accidents in the city, claiming the lives of 4,135 people. The rise in number of accidents prompted the city traffic police to carry out a survey and identify accident spots.

The survey revealed that most of these spots are in the suburbs. The old Pune-Mumbai highway is the deadliest with 10 accident spots and Solapur Road eight.

The accident spots on Solapur Road include Vaiduwadi junction, Mundhwa junction, Fatimanagar junction and Ramtekdi junction.

The accident spots on the Pune-Mumbai highway include Nashik Phata junction, road from Pimpri Chowk to Mahavir Chowk, road from Shivaji Chowk to Khandobacha Mal, Bhakti Shakti Chowk, Bopodi Chowk and Harris Bridge.

Inspector Vijay Palsule of the traffic branch (planning and administration) said, “On congested roads in downtown city, one has to drive slowly. However, the roads in suburbs are wider and motorists speed on them. That has been the main cause of more number of mishaps in the suburbs.”

He added, “At some spots, accidents are taking place due to poor road conditions, poor lighting system and punctures in dividers. We are in touch with the local administration for rectification of technical problems at some of the spots. We deploy additional manpower where there is a problem of undisciplined traffic.”
