Good news for students still looking for admissions to degree colleges in the city.

There might soon be more degree college seats available, as the state government is mulling over approving new permanently unaided colleges from this academic year, because the process was delayed due to court proceedings.

Rajesh Tope, minister of higher and technical education, is likely to table the proposal to extend the deadline for approving applications of new degree colleges to August 15 so that the colleges can start classes from this academic year, in the assembly on Wednesday.

Tope explained that the University of Mumbai regulation 82 (5) states that the state government has the right to approve new colleges before June 15 for them to begin classes in that year.

However, with the issue of government approvals for such colleges caught up in a legal battle, the June 15 deadline has already passed. Now, after the Supreme Court has put a stay order on the Bombay high court's decision to ask the government to stay out of the approval process since the colleges are not relying on them for financial aid, the government has got back its right to approve new institutes.

As students are facing a dearth of seats for degree courses, Tope said his department wanted to extend the deadline for applications of new approvals to August 15 only this year.

On the issue of existing colleges seeking to expand their divisions, faculties and new courses, there is no deadline hence, the government will soon take a decision on them. “The government needs to take a decision soon. We are in dire need of additional divisions. We have a waiting list of 120 students,” said TA Shiware, principal of KPB Hinduja College.
