Though the city received pre-monsoon showers for the third consecutive day on Sunday, weather bureau officials said the monsoon is not likely to hit  Mumbai for the next 48 hours.

Last year, the monsoon arrived in Mumbai on June 5, five days ahead of its normal date, June 10. However, the onset of monsoon in the country has been delayed by five days this year as it arrived in Kerala on June 5 instead of June 1.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon has been stuck at Harnai since Wednesday and it has now moved towards the Bay of Bengal. So Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are the next in line to receive showers.

“At present, conditions are not favourable for the arrival of the monsoon in the city for the next two days,” said VK Rajeev, IMD director.

For the last few days, the city has been receiving spurts of pre-monsoon showers in parts of the city and suburbs. This was the case on Sunday as well, with Colaba and Santa Cruz weather stations recording 6.4mm and 8.2mm of rainfall respectively. “So far, we have received pre-monsoon showers only,” confirmed Rajeev.

However, Sunday did not offer much respite to Mumbaikars when it came to humidity levels. According to IMD officials, the humidity levels recorded in the morning were 83% and 87% at Colaba and Santa Cruz weather stations respectively.

The IMD forecast has said the sky would be cloudy with a few spells of showers in parts of the city and suburbs in the next two days.
