There is good news for the people staying in buildings along the route of the country’s first monorail system. Studies conducted by Mumbai Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) during the trial runs of the monorail on the Wadala-Chembur phase have shown that the monorail would be quieter than a passing BEST bus.

While BEST buses can raise a noise level of close to 95 decibels, the noise created by the monorail has been measured at anything between 65 to 85 decibels.

Speaking to DNA, PRK Murthy, chief of the MMRDA’s transport and communication division, said that efforts were on to make the system quieter still.
“We are trying to reduce the sound levels of the motor further. In fact, the sound level of the monorail on the outside should be around 70 decibels, which is well within the accepted norms,” said Murthy.

Officials put the lower noise levels of the monorail to an absence of metal parts in the underframe of the coach as well as specialised rubber wheels that help the coach straddle the single beam or rail.

The monorail runs quite close to residential buildings on several of its 20km stretch, and the level of noise it emits would have been a factor in getting people to accept the system.
According to officials, the first phase of the monorail, a 8.8km stretch between Chembur and Wadala with seven stations is expected to start operations by mid-2013.
The system will have a minimum fare of Rs11 and a maximum fare of Rs30 once the entire 20km route between Jacob Circle and Chembur is opened for traffic.
