Independent MLA Vilas Lande tasted sweet revenge as his wife Mohini Lande was elected the 22nd mayor of the cash-rich Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Tuesday.

Lande, who was expelled from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for fighting the elections as a rebel candidate from Bhosari, was successful in getting his wife Mohini bag the coveted mayor’s seat from the NCP stronghold.

Lande, who was the PCMC mayor 15 years ago, was an influential NCP man before he rebelled against the party after being denied the ticket for the Bhosari assembly constituency. He managed to scrape a victory by defeating the Shiv Sena candidate Sulabha Ubale.

Post his election as an independent MLA, Lande has been supporting NCP. His clout had been growing in the party, given the fact that he had been able to break the saffron hold in Bhosari in the recently concluded civic polls. The Landes are the first couple to achieve the mayoral title in the history of PCMC politics.

Mohini, the three-time corporator from Bhosari, received 90 votes; while NCP’s Nigdi-Pradhikaran corporator Raju Misal was elected unopposed for the deputy mayor post.

Mohini becomes the fifth woman mayor as the post was reserved for a woman from the general category.

The election of mayoral title was held at PCMC main building at 11 am on Tuesday. Along with Mohini, Shiv Sena’s Sharada Babar and BJP’s Varsha Madigeri filed the nominations for mayor, but Madigeri later withdrew her nomination. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (4 corporators), Congress (14 corporators) and BJP did not take part in the voting.

Fifteen corporators, including RPI’s (Athavale group) sole corporator, voted for Babar; while nine independents and NCP corporators voted for Mohini.

Meanwhile, the election for deputy mayor, held under additional district collector Ganesh Patil, went unopposed.

For the deputy mayor’s post, Sena corporator Dhanjay Alhat and BJP’s Pramod Tamhankar had filed nomination but later withdrew it.
