The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has sought permission from the Bombay high court to organise a Marathi Food Festival at Shivaji Park in Dadar from May 3 to May 10 as part of Maharashtra Day celebrations.

The MNS had initially approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to hold such a festival at Shivaji Park. However, the corporation refused permission stating that Shivaji Park fell in a silence zone and hence no function can be held there.

As per the 2005 order of the HC following which Shivaji Park was declared as a silence zone, the corporation refused to grant permission to MNS. Use of loudspeakers is prohibited in a silence zone.

An application has been filed in the HC by Sandeep Deshpande, MNS’ Dadar wing president. “The Marathi Food Festival is to be held from May 3 to May 10 from 7pm to 10pm. The festival is part of Maharashtra Day celebrations,” states the application.

A division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Nitin Jamdar has kept the application for hearing on April 19.
In February this year, the HC had refused to grant permission to MNS to hold a public meeting at Shivaji Park.
