According to the rules, a party has to win three percent of the total number of seats in a state assembly to become a regional party. In Maharashtra's case, the required number of seats is nine.
"The MNS has won 13 seats -- four more than the requirement. It has been awarded the status of a regional party," an election commission official told reporters in New Delhi.
However, MNS leaders in Mumbai were tight-lipped on the issue. "We have not received any communication from the election commission," party spokesperson Nitin Sardesai said.
With the status of a regional party, the MNS will now get a permanent election symbol.
