Two days after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray forced filmmaker Karan Johar to tender an apology for calling Mumbai by its previous name, Bombay, in his film Wake up Sid, an MNS candidate referred to the city as "Bombay" and "Bambai".
Rajendra Mahale, MNS candidate from the Belapur constituency in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, referred to Mumbai as "Bombay" and "Bambai" while speaking to a television channel.
This has evoked criticism from the party's rival the Shiv Sena, led by Raj's estranged
cousin Uddhav. "Raj should first ensure that his party members refer to Mumbai by its official name before taking [it] upon himself the onus of making others refer [to] the city as Mumbai," a Sena leader said.
