Mumbaikars will have to pay more for milk. The Maharashtra Doodh Utpadak Sangh (producers association) has decided to increase the milk price by Rs2 per litre. It is likely to be implemented within the next 20 days.

It will be the third price hike in this fiscal and tenth in the last four years. The state government has increased the milk price by Rs13 in the last four years. After the price hike, one litre of milk will cost Rs31. Last time the state government has hiked the milk price on July 10.

According to sources, the state cabinet has taken a decision to pay Rs2 more per litre to the milk producers. “This will affect the end consumers directly,” the source said.

According to the milk co-operatives, the cost of procurement of milk has increased. The recent hike in fuel prices also affected the transportation cost of the milk.

“The milk procurement price has increased, as the cost of milk production has gone up. Due to drought-like situation in rural Maharashtra, the cost of fodder and labour has also gone up and the production of milk has also come down,” said Vinayak Patil, chairman of Mahananda Dairy. But he refused to comment on the price hike.

This hike will also have a direct impact on the prices of milk products like curd, paneer and shrikhand. Following the government’s decision, major milk dairies in Maharashtra have hiked the prices in the range of Re1-Rs2 per litre, depending on the type of milk. Dairies like Warana and Gokul have hiked their prices by Re1 per litre (for cow milk) and Rs3 per litre for other standard milk (which is called buffalo milk).

Mahananda Dairy, one of the state’s leading milk cooperatives, has decided to increase prices by Re1 per litre on both types of milk. The average milk price is Rs29 per litre.
