Today will be the lucky day for 3,863 people among the hundreds of thousands who had applied for the affordable tenements scheme of the Maharashtra Housing and Area
Development Authority (Mhada). The lottery for the allotments will be held at the
Rangsharada Auditorium, Bandra, at 9 am.

Mhada received 4.33 lakh applications, but the number of applicants is half of that, since many submitted more than one application for houses in different categories.

“Thousands have applied across categories. There are even applicants who have applied in four categories, and such applicants clearly have better chances of figuring among the lottery winners. Then there are families where every member has submitted an application. This obviously increases the family’s chances of winning at least one flat,” a senior Mhada official told DNA.

Arvind Dhole, acting chief officer of Mhada’s Mumbai board, said though an applicant may win more than one house, he or she will be allotted only one. Also, he said, all
applications but one for houses in the same category have been rejected.
