The MH-47 is Mumbai’s fourth RTO office, but it’s only on paper despite being formally declared in the official state statistics.

The new Borivli RTO office, that is supposed to lessen the burden on the western suburbs and cater to the needs of regions between Goregaon and Dahisar, is unable to start operations due to lack of staff and space.

Maharashtra transport commissioner Dilip Jadhav said that they have been unable to find land for the office. “We are even ready to rent a place. We have also put an advertisement in newspapers for land, but so far no response,” he said.

The city’s fourth RTO is among the three new RTOs those were set up last year to ease pressure on the already overburdened regional transport officers in the city and to provide citizens with services near their home. The other two have been set up at Panvel (MH-46) and Vasai (MH-48).

According to the latest available statistics of 2009-10, the number of vehicles registered at the city RTO office at Mumbai Central (Tardeo) is 36,838 and that at the eastern suburbs (Wadala) is 29,668, but the registration figures of the western suburbs office at Andheri is 64,873, almost double the number of the other two offices.
