Mercury likely to keep rising over next two days

The increase in temperature over the last two days in the city may continue for another couple of days, say officials from the meteorological department.

The Santa Cruz weather station on Sunday recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 35.8°C and 17.6°C, respectively, while Colaba registered 36.8°C and 21.0°C.

“The western disturbance over Pakistan and Jammu Kashmir has moved to east northerly. So the northerly wind over Mumbai, which is dry and cold, has become less marked,” said Bishwombhar Singh, director of the meteorological department.

The easterly wind coming from the land is dry and hot.

Therefore the local sea breeze levels rose by noon and did not have sufficient moisture to reduce the temperature; both Colaba and Santa Cruz recorded extremely low humidity levels at 17 and 25 percent respectively.

The temperature is now seven degrees above normal in Colaba, and five degrees above normal in Santa Cruz.

“If the situation remains the same, the temperature is likely to increase in the next two days,” said Singh.
