A 16-year-old girl, Payal Gupte, a relative of Bal Thackeray, was attacked with a wooden log by an apparently deranged person on Sunday evening outside Mithibai College, Vile Parle. The victim’s father said she required 15 stitches on her head and is in ICU.

The police said the incident occurred around 8.30pm. Payal, a first-year arts student, was waiting along with a few of her classmates for an auto rickshaw, when the man hit her on the back of her head. She also suffered hand injuries.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the man damaged other vehicles parked along the same road before assaulting Payal.

“There were other girls and boys along with her, but he assaulted only my daughter because we are Bal Thackeray’s relatives,” her father, Pankaj, said.

Additional commissioner of police (west) Amitabh Gupta said: “The accused has been identified and we are looking for him. He will be nabbed soon. We are recording the victim’s statement and will file a case against her assaulter.”

Gupte is a key member in the organising committee of Mithibai College’s annual festival Kshitij and was there till late even on a Sunday because of the preparations.
