Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) will now be equipped with a ‘mega kitchen’, which can prepare around 2 lakh meals a day for commuters.

The mega kitchen, which will also be implemented in New Delhi, will source its kitchen infrastructure from the now-abandoned kitchens of the scam-ridden Commonwealth Games venues.

On his recent trip to Mumbai, railway board chairman Vivek Sahai spoke on converting trains on the Harbour line into 12-cars, and running suburban trains to Dahanu within this financial year. Sahai however said that the proposed underground railway connection is not feasible between CST and Churchgate.

Sahai said the mega kitchens would ease the load on the base kitchens, which can only produce 15,000 meals daily, much below the requirements. “Kitchens at the Commonwealth games’ venue are lying abandoned with hi-quality food-processing machines and utensils,” he added.

When asked about how sturdy rail bridges were in case of a Japan-like earthquake or tsunami situation, he said that the bridges in western India withstood earthquakes at Latur and Bhuj, and there had been no damages to any of the bridges, as they were periodically inspected. He also said the railways were planning start a national smart card to make the process of ticketing faster.

Commuters on Central Railway will get real-time minute-to-minute updates on the movement of local trains, thanks to a centralised train management system. “The entire track layout of CR along with the train movements has been replicated on huge mega screens. Commuters will get be automatic multi-lingual passenger announcements on the train, bilingual displays at station entrances, and information relating to the next two incoming trains at each platform,” managing director and Chief Country Representative, Bombardier Transportation, told DNA.

The system has not begun functioning completely due to delay in completion of Kurla-Thane lines as the track layout is yet to be reflected there.
